Aftercare and side effects of fillers

Aesthetic injectable aftercare is a crucial aspect of ensuring the best and safest results while minimising potential risks associated with cosmetic procedures. At Sally Wagstaff Aesthetics, we prioritise comprehensive aftercare to support our clients throughout their aesthetic journey. As a Medical Aesthetics business led by Sally Wagstaff, a Registered Nurse and Independent Nurse Prescriber, we are committed to providing safe and effective treatments backed by professional expertise.

Injectable fillers are licensed medical treatments used to enhance facial contours, restore volume, and rejuvenate the skin. While fillers can offer amazing results when done properly by qualified medical professionals, it’s essential to understand the risks associated with any medical procedure involving needles and cannulas.

Bruising and swelling are common side effects following filler injections – and while we would prefer they didn’t happen, and do everything we can to avoid them, they are considered a ‘normal’ side effect. Typically, these effects subside within a few days and are not cause for concern. However, sudden or severe bruising or swelling should be promptly reported straight away to your injector for evaluation. Hyaluronic acid, the primary component of fillers, has the effect of attracting water molecules, contributing to initial swelling post-treatment.

What are the side effects of fillers

One of the most significant concerns associated with fillers is the risk of vascular occlusion, where the filler inadvertently enters a blood vessel, potentially compromising blood flow to surrounding tissues. This rare but serious complication requires immediate attention and intervention. This can present as pain, and most commonly a pale or blanched area of skin with reduced capillary refill. Hyaluronidase, also known as Hyalase, is a prescription-only medication used to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers in case of emergencies, and supports the importance of proper training and oversight in aesthetic practice. Good practice – for example good knowledge of facial anatomy, use of cannula rather than needle where appropriate, good understanding of injection techniques and how to spot a possible problem helps to avoid the incidence of these more serious side effects, however due to the fact that everyone’s anatomy is different, these issues can occur even for the most experienced injector.

At Sally Wagstaff Aesthetics in Lichfield City Centre, we prioritise patient safety and ensure that all clients receive comprehensive aftercare instructions to promote optimal healing and minimise potential complications. Our aftercare protocol includes:

Do’s:

  • Keep the area clean
  • Take anti-histamine as the first line treatment if you have discomfort and swelling
  • Take paracetamol if needed
  • Use a clean ice pack wrapped in kitchen paper to help with swelling as needed
  • Contact Sally immediately if there are any concerns
  • Avoiding touching, pressing, or manipulating the treated areas for at least six hours post-treatment.
  • Refraining from vigorous exercise, sun exposure, and heat exposure for two days following the procedure.
  • Avoid alcohol – this is likely to increase the risk of bruising and swelling, and may mask sensations that we would want you to be aware of.
  • Do not take Ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications as this can cause further bleeding and increase bruising or swelling
  • Avoiding the use of Retinol or similar products for two days after treatment to prevent irritation.
  • Avoid cosmetic treatments such as laser therapy, peels, or facials for two weeks after the procedure.
  • Minimising makeup or lipstick application until the day after treatment to prevent contamination of the injection sites.
  • Being mindful of past cold sores or oral herpetic infections, as facial treatments may trigger reactivation.
  • Understanding that healing rates may vary between different areas of the face and scheduling a follow-up appointment at least four weeks post-treatment.
  • Continuing all medications prescribed by healthcare providers, as there is no requirement to stop medications after filler injections.

Clients are encouraged to contact Sally Wagstaff Aesthetics immediately if they experience any concerning symptoms after treatment, including pain, visual disturbances, discoloured blotches, skin blanching, severe pain, pustules, redness, inflammation, swelling, or itching. Prompt communication ensures timely intervention and resolution of any post-treatment issues.

By prioritising comprehensive aftercare and maintaining open communication channels, we strive to provide our clients with a safe, supportive, and rewarding aesthetic experience. At Sally Wagstaff Aesthetics, your well-being is our top priority, and we are dedicated to delivering exceptional care at every stage of your aesthetic journey.
