It is natural to want to look and feel your best when pregnant – god knows it’s a tough time!! Many women wonder if anti-wrinkle injections are safe for them during pregnancy because they are used to keeping them up to date regularly (which under normal circumstances is a good thing!) The answer is that anti-wrinkle injections should be avoided in pregnancy due to the lack of research on the effects anti-wrinkle treatments may have on a developing baby.
Injectable anti-wrinkle treatments contain ingredients such as botulinum toxin type A which have not been tested extensively in pregnant women. Thus, there is no clear evidence as to whether they can cause any harm or complications during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, anti-wrinkle injections should absolutely be avoided during this time – I can’t think of any occasion where I would think it appropriate to inject an expectant mother!
It is also important to note that anti-wrinkle injections may not be suitable for women who are breastfeeding, as the ingredients have not been tested on breastfeeding mothers either. I always advise my clients to wait until they have finished breastfeeding or given birth before considering anti-wrinkle treatments.
